Time to Pack the Closet!
Just folding up your cloths and tossing them into a
box, bin, or bag seems simply enough right? Wrong! This can be a costly mistake
especially when you are storing quality fabrics, leather, and or furs.
Make sure all clothing is clean and COMPLETELY dry
before packing. Avoid using starch or other fabric finishers on any clothing
that will be stored.
Avoid using those vacuum seal bags. Yes, they are
great when it comes to saving space…but not when it comes to storing your
expensive clothing. Vacuum seal bags trap moisture which can cause your cloths
to mold..YUCK!! These bags can also permanently crush your fabrics (shirt
collars especially!)
A great option is using a wardrobe box to store your
clothing. These boxes come equipped with a hanging rod in the box. Hanging your
clothing in a box will allow it to “breath” while in storage preventing
moisture build up and mold. Avoid using hangers that could rust – use only
plastic or wooden hangers.
Another great option is to store your clothing in a
suitcase (what better! These were made to hold cloths!) . Only store clothing
that can be folded and stacked in a suitcase. Stick to the wardrobe box for
such items as dress shirts, suits, and coats. When stacking folded clothing in
the suitcase place heavier items on the bottom and the lighter more delicate
items on the top.
Pack shoes separately from your clothing. This will
keep your clothes from getting dirty. Stuff shoes with socks or paper to help
keep their shape while in storage.
Taking a little extra care when packing your clothing
can $ave you a major headache when you retrieve your items from storage.
