Preparing Items for Shipping

It is extremely important that you make sure all of your items are packed properly for shipping. Follow these simple guidelines to ensure you are packing properly.

1.       Cushion It
  • Use fillers and air-cellular cushioning materials Bubble Wrap®, newspaper, loose fill peanuts to fill void spaces in your boxes. This will prevent movement of your items during shipping.
  •  Wrap individual items with Bubble Wrap® or newspaper. Position them away from other items and the sides, corners, top, and bottom of the outer box.
  •  Wrap individual items, as a general rule, with at least a 2" (5-cm) thickness of air-cellular cushioning or foam material so items fit snugly inside an inside box or corrugated outer container
  •  Place items that could be affected by dirt, or moisture inside plastic bags

 2.       Box It
  • It is a great idea to place a second copy of your shipping label inside your box. This will ensure that FedEx is still able to deliver your package in the event that the label on the outside your box comes off.
  • Ship non-fragile items such as soft goods (bedding, clothing, ect.) inside a sturdy outer box.
  • Use only boxes of good sturdy condition. For heaver items (such as books, ect.) you will want to use a box that is “double-walled”. Our Collegebox is a double walled box

      3.       Seal It
  • Use a pressure-sensitive plastic tape that is at least 2” wide (you can find this tape in your Collegeboxes Supply Kit).
  • Apply tape evenly across flaps and seams to both the top and bottom of the outer box. Use the “H taping Method” in the image below.
3.       Label It
  • Place delivery information inside and outside the package, including an address for your recipient and for yourself.
  • Remove or cross out any old address labels that are on your box.
  • It is a good idea to write your name and shipping address on your box in addition to your actual shipping label. This will help get your package to its destination in the event that the shipping label falls off.
  • Place package labels and packing slips facing the same direction on the same side of the package.
  • Place shipping labels on the package's largest surface. Avoid wrapping labels around a corner or directly on an edge or seam of the package.
