Collegeboxes VS. The DIY Move
Whether to use a moving service such as Collegeboxes
or to move yourself at the end of the semester can be a tough decision. Using
a moving service will certainly be easier (especially if Mom and Dad are not
around to help!). Your items will be picked up right from campus – and in most
cases right from your dorm room. However the Do-It – Yourself move can be more budget
friendly depending on your needs.
Using a Moving service (such as Collegeboxes)
The cost to use a moving service can vary depending on
what you are storing. For example, if you store one Collegebox (24”X18”X16")
with Collegeboxes it is going to cost $45 for the entire summer including pick
up at your dorm and delivery back to campus in the fall (on scheduled pickup
and delivery dates). Keep in mind the average student stores 5 boxes.
If you do not have a lot of items to store going with a
service such as Collegeboxes is a great option. Everything is taken care of for
you (so you can focus on your finals). You do not have to rent a truck, reserve
a storage room, and hire labor (or beg friends to help you!).
The Do- It- Your Self Move
Moving yourself is a great option if you have a lot of
items to store and do not mind putting in a little extra work! If you need to
store fifteen plus boxes and furniture a self move may be a more affordable
option. If you move all of your items yourself rather than hiring help, you can
save yourself close to $400. Keep in mind you will need to rent a truck, (or
borrow someone’s if you do not have your own vehicle) reserve a self storage
unit (you will want to do this early, storage units near universities tend to
fill up fast), and hire labor (or beg friends to help). All of this can be
quit stressful when you should be focusing on your finals!
All in all if a low stress move is what you are
looking for go with a moving service. If you have a lot of items to store or
have a friend that you can share a storage unit with, a self move may be a
better option if budget is a major factor.
